A critical date is quickly approaching for Microsoft SQL Server licensing in terms of deadlines to convert your processors to core grants. April 1st 2015 is the processor to core conversion date, or “core grant” deadline. This is the last date where customers can take advantage of the full core grant from Microsoft as they transition from SQL Processor to Core based licensing models. For any processor licenses you have purchased prior to April 1, 2015, you will get a core license grant for the exact number of cores per processor. For example, if you have a processor with 8 cores, Microsoft will give you 8 core licenses. However, for any processor licenses purchases after April 1, 2015, you will only get the minimum 4 core licenses per Processor through the grant. So, in the case of an 8 core processor, you would need to purchase the other 4 core licenses. Based on Select Level A and Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Edition this would mean an additional cost of $47,820.00. These numbers can quickly spiral upwards in large enterprises. It is important that you certify your SQL footprint before April 1 2015. You can use your own software inventory tool to gather this data for the certification process but Microsoft recommends using the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit, which is a free download.
