MapPoint and Streets & Trips, we hardly knew you.    On December 31, 2014 Microsoft officially pulled the plug on these old standbys although online support will continue to be available until July 14, 2015.

As per the MapPoint and Streets & Trips product websites, clients are expected to migrate to the Bing Maps Platform and it offers the following guidance:

“Looking for MapPoint alternatives using the Bing Maps Platform? Explore the options available.

Just need maps and directions? Use Bing Maps

Need data visualization and analysis? Power Map for Excel allows you to quickly transform public or corporate data into dynamic and breathtaking 3D map visualizations and then easily share as cinematic tours that tell captivating narratives of your data. And you can do all of this within the familiar environment of Excel.

Are you a developer? Check out Bing Maps API and SDK’s including AJAX Control Version 7, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) Control for desktop, REST Services, Spatial Data Services and other options.”

On one level I can’t say I’m surprised by this move as the world has clearly moved to web based mapping solutions in so many respects.   Regardless, I can’t help but feel a little sense of nostalgia when I saw these were end of life.
